Old Mission Kopperkraft / Fred Brosi / Hans Jauchen

Fred Brosi was one of the earliest figures in the SF metalsmithing community. Documentation on his work appears as early as 1907, he rose to prominence in 1915 when he formed the Ye Olde Copper Shop with Hans Jauchen. This partnership only lasted a few years before Brosi formed the Old Mission Kopperkraft shop, which remained open until 1923.

Hans Jauchen moved to the SF area around 1910 from Amsterdam where he was an award winning sculptor. In addition to running Jauchen’s Olde Copper Shop, he was also a teacher of metalwork at UC Berkeley. His most famous form is the use of applied bronze and cast eucalyptus pods and leaf forms on hammered copper pieces.

OMKK also began to use the eucalyptus designs, but their quality is not near the earlier work of Jauchen’s shop. Much of their work is spun copper with hammering applied after formation for design effect.
