Darmstadt School

Darmstadt was a major center for design at the turn of the century, most notable for the establishment of the Darmstadt Colony around 1900. This Colony was created by the master architect & designer, Joseph Maria Olbrich who also created much of the decorative metalwork that went into each studio & home. Another major figure was Albin Muller, who worked wonderful designs in copper, brass, pewter and bronze. Other major figures working in metal at Darmstadt include Peter Behrens, Paul Haustein & Patriz Huber. It is important to note that very little of this work was handmade, but rather designed and manufactured by a company with machines. The design work is so strong, that it deserves much recognition for inspiring metalsmiths globally via the period magazines and books…
